Fatima’s Story of Change
Fatima, our Sewing Technician, joined The Social Outfit’s Industrial Beginners Program when she was 21. Four years later, she’s leading on sampling, sewing toiles and upskilling in soft tailoring for customers like the Governor-General.
“My name is Fatima, and I am proud to work at The Social Outfit. The Social Outfit is a very special organisation – a place where not only clothes are made but lives are rebuilt. This company wholeheartedly supports migrant women—women who have left their countries and are now seeking a better life here."
“I am one of those women. When I came to this country, nothing was easy. The language, the culture, the work – everything was new and challenging. But when I joined The Social Outfit, I felt seen, heard, and most importantly, supported."
Over the four years Fatima has been part of the team, she has seen The Social Outfit grow, a change accelerated by the move from Newtown to our Marrickville workroom, and the positive impact that space has had. This move was funded directly by our annual fundraising campaign, Wear The Change. Fatima shared her excitement about the Marrickville space in awe of the colour, the fabrics, the machines, and the environment, which she describes as precious for friendship and creativity.
“The Social Outfit is not just a workplace for me; it is a bridge—a bridge from hardship to hope, from loneliness to friendship, and from dependence to independence. Here, we don’t just learn sewing skills; we grow together, support each other, and build a better future for ourselves and our families."
“Every day I spend at The Social Outfit reminds me of the strength of migrant women—women who, despite all difficulties, stand tall, learn, and move forward. This company, by creating real opportunities for us, proves that when women are trusted, they can change the world."
Fatima has shown great potential, always willing to take on new tasks, upskill, and learn. She is the Sewing Technician behind our recent Elemental Suit Blazer and Elemental Denim Suit Pants, which are now her favourite items to create. When asked about her dreams, she shared her desire to continue learning and developing her skills to bring beautiful garments to the community.
Fatima also shares her gratitude, not only to the women she works alongside, but to everyone who chooses to support The Social Outfit:
“I am deeply grateful to all the members of the The Social Outfit team, mentors, colleagues, and everyone who supports us along the way. I am proud to be part of the The Social Outfit family—a place where migrant women are seen, heard, and supported.”
