Industrial Sewing Program
Grow your skills and perfect your technique on an industrial sewing machine. Open to all women with Refugee, Humanitarian or Bridging Visas or new migrants who have arrived in Australia in the past 5 years.
To be eligible, you must successfully complete a sewing skills test in our Marrickville workroom. These classes are designed for experienced and skilled sewers who are wanting to build work-readiness skills.
Priority will be given to women with work rights.
You must commit to the full term.

Earn and Learn Sewing Program
Gain knowledge and experience in sewing to industry standards, applying quality control all sewing tasks and production processes.
To be eligible, applicants must have completed The Social Outfit’s Industrial Sewing Training first. Open to women with Refugee, Humanitarian or Bridging Visas or new migrants who have arrived in Australia in the past 5 years. Must have work rights in Australia.
These classes are designed for experienced and skilled sewers who are wanting to build work-readiness skills.
You must commit to the full term.
Training
- 50 hours of training and paid work experience in The Social Outfit’s retail store in Newtown.
- Broadening your retail and customer service skills through activities with industry partners.
Mentoring and Support
- Fortnightly group mentoring sessions to gain skills and knowledge about working in Australia, set career goals, develop your resume and improve your job readiness.
- Introduction to employment pathways including an industry excursion. Where possible, we will work with you to find a future employment option.
Pay
Trainees are paid Award wages under the General Retail Industry Award at Retail Assistant (Level 1) - casual.
Program Structure
The 10-week program runs four times a year covering:
- Week 1: Orientation and Job Preparation Session
- Week 2 to 10: Fortnightly mentoring sessions, industry excursions and 1 casual paid shift of 5.5 hours each week.
Women wanting to apply will need to complete an online application.
