Retail Training Program

Applications for The Social Outfit's Retail Training Program for April - June 2024 are now open.

Applications close 21 March 2024.

The program offers a paid training program for four young women in Retail and Customer Service at The Social Outfit’s fashion store in Newtown, Sydney. The 12-week program will run from 3 April to 22 June 2024.

Each trainee will complete one  mentoring session and a casual paid shift of 5 hours each week, for 11 weeks. A half-day Orientation and Job Preparation Session will be held for the group in the first week of April. Retail shifts will commence the second week of April 2024.

Our ideal candidates will be:

• Young women aged between 18 – 29 years.

• Arrived in Australia within the last 5 years as a refugee or humanitarian migrant.

• Currently looking for their first Australian job.

• Interested in a career in retail, sales or customer service.

This program is an opportunity to build your confidence and learn all about retail customer service, how to process sales, ship orders and create beautiful displays in store.

• Friendly and outgoing.

• Well-presented and punctual.

• Eager to learn.

Weekly online training modules will provide information on key topics such as product knowledge, customer experience, styling, visual merchandising, e-commerce and social media. Progress through 12 modules in your own time over the 12-week program and test your knowledge with a quiz at the end of each lesson.

• Interested in fashion/personal style.

• Has conversational English skills. This program is an opportunity to practise and develop your English skills in a workplace setting.

• Is available to work one day per week on either a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday 11:00 am – 4:30 pm, for three months.

• In total Trainees will receive approximately 55 hours of paid work over 3 months. 

Trainees are paid Award wages under the General Retail Industry Award at Retail Assistant (Level 1).

• Available to attend a weekly face to face mentoring session in Newtown on either a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

In the mentoring session each Trainee will be assisted to gain skills and knowledge about working in Australia, set career goals, to develop a resume, and gain support with job seeking in preparation for the next role.

• Able to travel to our Newtown store, at 188 King Street Newtown.

• Be available for additional program components including a Financial Literacy Workshop and Industry Excursion to experience how other retailers and businesses work and gain even more workplace experience.
