Retail Training Program

Learn all things retail and customer service in our Retail Training and Work Readiness Program for young refugee women (18-29 years).

In your first Australian job you'll gain paid retail work experience and customer service skills in The Social Outfit’s fashion store in Newtown, Sydney.

Who is this program for?

Open to women with Refugee or Humanitarian Visas.

Young women aged between 18 – 29 years who:

  • are looking for their first Australian job, who want to transition to part-time or full-time work beyond this program
  • are interested in a career in retail, sales or customer service.
  • have beginner level English (Level 2 to Level 3)
  • are friendly, eager to learn and want to practice their English in a workplace setting.
  • are available to work one day per week, in Newtown, on either a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday 11:00 am – 4:30 pm for the 10 weeks.
Program Details

Training

You'll complete our in-store and online retail training program that includes:

  • approximately 55 hours of paid retail experience
  • completing our online retail training school
  • broadening your skills and networks through events, an industry excursion and financial literacy training.

Mentoring and Support

  • Work 1-2-1 with your mentor to gain skills and knowledge about working in Australia, set career goals, develop your resume and get job ready.
  • Where possible, we will work with you to find future employment including introduction to our Employment Pathway Partners.

Pay

Trainees are paid Award wages under the General Retail Industry Award at Retail Assistant (Level 1) - casual.

Program Structure

The 10-week program runs four times a year covering:

  • Week 1: Orientation and Job Preparation Session
  • Week 2 to 10: Weekly mentoring sessions, tasks and 1 casual paid shift of 5.5 hours

Women wanting to apply will need to complete an online application, via the Apply Now button (this will only appear when applications are open).

If selected, applicants will need to attend an interview.

Applications open four times a year (March, June, September, December).
